Binaural Beats
Cultures around the world have used drumbeats and chanting for thousands of years to create frequencies that allow human beings to drop into different brainwave states. Binaural beats are the beautiful, electronic version of entraining the brain. Two different frequencies co-exist and are played through the left and right ears. The brain interprets the two as one consistent beat, and creates a frequency between the two. This stimulates healing, different states of consciousness, concentration and growth. There is a spectrum of different frequencies and they affect the brain in various ways.
Delta waves (1-4 Hz) promote deep sleep, pain relief, anti-aging, healing and access to the unconscious mind. Theta waves (4-8 Hz) relate to REM (rapid eye movement or dream state), deep relaxation and inner peace, meditation and creativity. Alpha waves (8-14 Hz) bring relaxed focus, stress reduction, accelerated learning, positive thinking and flow state when you are effortlessly engaged in an activity or in your environment. Beta waves (14-30 Hz) are for focussed attention, high-level cognition, analytical thinking and problem solving and they stimulate energy and action. Finally in this current spectrum, Gamma waves (30-100 Hz) are for high-level information processing, cognitive enhancement, memory recall, peak awareness and transcendental states.
You can pick binaural beats with any of these frequency ranges to alter your own brain states and bring into action different capacities depending on what you need or desire. It’s a safe, useful tool kit to play with for children’s development, health and wellbeing. It can be super fun, what do we need today, for school, for finishing a project, for learning, for relaxation. Once you’ve found a selection that you like and have tested, children can pick their own. I listen to them in the library to stay on track when people are shouting at their computers! (really it works..)
Binaural beats bring two frequencies into one, blending all kinds of energies gently into a natural and grounded resonance. Again its a metaphor in my mind for how to navigate an often complex day..
