A Creative Life
Within family life lives a well-spring of never-ending creativity. As parents we can support this to flow through our children, to grow and flourish in wonderful ways. Children are inherently creative in everything they do. Sparking new family conversations and pioneering ways of looking at things; imagining and revelling in the majesty of Nature; exploring and inventing, dancing and singing without hesitation they give themselves wholeheartedly to one form of expression or another. It’s no surprise that their rich, wild, creative spirit transforms the adults around them.
Adults too begin to search for a more creative life, one that brings fulfilment. It can be very healing. I definitely found this to be the case when I fell pregnant with my daughter. Her father and I purchased a three-quarter length Cort guitar from Byron Music. We’d moved to Australia on a shoe-string and driven a 4WD from West to East bush-camping, fishing and surfing. We landed in Mullumbimby. I would sit on the steps of our unit and sing in the lulls as my belly grew. I began drawing again. Interestingly the creative instinct didn’t settle down, it just grew stronger and more vivid.
As Remy became old enough we would body paint and finger paint. She often shapeshifted into a wolf and tied on a tail everywhere we went. If I was able to clothe her, primo importance of wardrobe attire was a sparkly dress-up. Well, two, which would be alternated as one became too bedraggled and mud-splattered. The list of sweet and nutty eccentricities that children produce is endless. This can be liberating and magical as a parent, and how much fun is it to experience together. We would like to share this ride to nurture and develop your child’s creativity, your own, your family connections and those with the wider community.
Making space, time and presence for our creativity to be expressed in an intentional way every day can bring untold rewards. As our lives become increasingly more bound up with technology, most of us hanker after activities that are based in physical reality. Creating something from scratch, especially if its your own idea, is really rewarding! Visit our project ideas for some inspiration and feel free to share any ideas you’d like to with us, any favourites in your home with your kids!
